Orlando Pirates have returned to the winning ways when they beat nine-man Maritzburg United 2-0 in an Absa premiership clash at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night.
The victory takes Bucs to position nine on the league table after ending their 12-match winless run, while the Team of Choice remain eighth.
The Buccaneers applied some pressure on the Team of Choice defence in the opening stages of the match, with Oupa Manyisa looking lively for the home side.
The midfielder’s well-taken corner-kick found Ayanda Gcaba, who rose highest in the Maritzburg box to head home – making it 1-0 to Pirates 13 minutes into the game.
Meanwhile Bidvest Wits have returned to the top of the Absa Premiership log after a comfortable 3-0 win over Golden Arrows at Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Frank Mhango’s penalty and Mogakolodi Ngele’s second-half brace took the Clever Boys to a victory which sees them leapfrog Cape Town City to first place on 44 points (having played a game less than the Citizens, who can return to pole position when they play on Thursday).
Wits started the match strongly and created early opportunities from set pieces, with Arrows’ defence even forced to clear off their own goal line after ‘keeper Nkosingiphile Gumede was caught out of position.
In Polokwane Maboke Matlakala’s brace handed Baroka FC the full three points as they beat Free State Stars 2-1 in their Absa Premiership encounter at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night.
The victory took the Limpopo-based side to the 15th spot on the log table with 21 points from 23 matches in their 2016/17 Premier Soccer League campaign.
For Stars, striker Mohammed Anas netted their only goal as they failed to ease their relegation concerns.
Despite playing for almost an hour with only ten men Polokwane City played to a 0-0 draw against Chippa United in an Absa Premiership match at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on Tuesday night.
Chippa were poor in front of goal despite having a one man advantage with the stalemate extending the Chilli Boys’ winless run to seven matches.
The draw sees Chippa up to 24 points from 23 matches which places them at 11th place on the table, four places above the relegation zone but only three points out of danger.
The 0-0 draw for Polokwane will be seen as a victory after playing the majority of the game one man down.
The point sees Polokwane stay inside the top eight, currently placed at seventh spot with 28 points from 23 matches.
